USCIS Changes Deferred Action Policy for Special Immigrant Juveniles

USCIS changed its approach to deferred action for certain young people with approved Special Immigrant Juvenile (SIJ) classification. SIJ classification is available to qualifying immigrant children who have been abused, abandoned, or neglected by one or both parents and who meet additional state-court and federal requirements. Deferred action can temporarily protect someone from removal while waiting for an immigrant visa to become available. The policy change affects how USCIS considers that protection for SIJ beneficiaries and has generated legal challenges.
